INTERVIEW: Husband Band

Husband are an alt-rock band from the UK who got in touch with us for an interview. And we were more than happy to oblige! We find out more about who they are and what their plans are for 2020…

You are literally fresh on the scene – tell us some more about you?

We are Husband, a 4-piece alt-rock band based in London. We don’t have the typical story about how we got the band together… we had ads up on Gumtree, naming our biggest influences, hoping to form a band. We’ve been incredibly lucky to find each other and after a couple of years of writing and performing we released our debut single ‘What a World’ in November 2019, a song which describes the feeling of disconnect towards tragic world events as they are so far removed from our everyday lives. The song embodies the feeling of guilt towards this disconnect and the resulting nonchalance towards such events, despite being so much bigger than the daily issues you face. We followed this up with ‘What Do You See’ in December, and today we release our 3rd single ‘I Don’t Sleep’.

Who would you say are your major influences?

Our influences are really important to us, as it’s what brought us together in the first place. We’re hugely influenced by The National, Nick Cave and Radiohead, but we’re also inspired by bands in other genres too (i.e. I’ve currently got Run The Jewels on!). We’ve got a spotify playlist that we update regularly with songs that inspire us, you can find it here –

What is the plan next for you heading into 2020?

Our third single ‘I Don’t Sleep’ is released today – it definitely touches more on our Nick Cave influences than our previous songs, but I hope it also holds its own with the Husband sound. Just like our other releases, it was recorded with Sean Read (Manic Street Preachers, Edwyn Collins, Dexy’s Midnight Runners) at Famous Times Studio in Hackney. We’re also in the studio this week recording more songs and we’ve got our first headline gig of the year at ‘The Old Blue Last’ in Shoreditch on Friday 7th February. We organise a lot of our own gigs and like to get our friends on the bill, keep them free entry, and get as many people listening to our music as possible.

Anything you have you been watching, reading, listening to, and loving recently? Any recommendations?

I’m stuck on ‘Big Thief’ at the moment, I love their sound and I wish we could be as productive as them (two amazing albums in one year!?). I also love the Spotify Wrapped playlists… Apparently I really vibed with Teyana Taylor, The National, Tyler The Creator AND Phoebe Bridgers – Spotify suggests that I’m genre fluid…

Finally what is your tip of the day?

Risotto is never as good as you think it will be.

We look forward to hearing more from the band and seeing how they get on in 2020!
