Having recently sat through Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Scorsese’s The Irishman, it got us thinking about what other movies out there we have really enjoyed, despite their very long running time.

So we decided to do a short list of very long films, to help lockdown pass a little quicker! These are our personal favourites and we would love to hear all about yours.

So, in no particular order…

Let’s get the big one out of the way. When the news came in that this movie was going to be running at 3 hours we were overcome with excitement but felt that bladder training might be required as we didn’t want to miss to tie up so many years worth of movies and characters, and we felt the way it came together was absolutely magnificent. Why don’t you go mega and double bill with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – you got time to now, right? You could even just start with Iron Man and go from there if you wanted to!

2. TONI ERDMAN | 2 Hours 45 Mins
This is a wonderful German movie which you would think (based on the synopsis) would drag, but instead, it dreamily flows by. With its touching and comedic story of a father who tries to reconnect with his hard-nosed business-focused daughter by creating an alter ego as a life coach. It will make you squirm, laugh, and cry! If you haven’t heard of this movie and are comfortable with subtitles, then we strongly recommend this – it is absolutely brilliant! See it before it gets re-made!

Probably not a movie to watch if you are home schooling or isolating with your parents…but if you have a bit of space and free time to watch this beautiful 3hr romantic LGBT drama, we definitely recommend it. I must confess that there was so much spaghetti-eating in this movie that on first showing I actually stopped the movie, bought some spaghetti, made a lovely bowl of it, and then enjoyed the rest of the movie with it! (If you know, you know).

The movie zips by, thanks to the magnetic performances of its leads Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulous (who apparently was picked due to the way she ate!) – both deservedly won the Palme D’Or for their work.

4. MAGNOLIA | 3 Hours 8 Mins
Edging just over 3hrs, Magnolia is a fascinating movie released right at the end of the 90s. It is, in our opinion, one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s greatest pieces of work with a cast that is truly stunning! A handful of characters and their story lines all cross over and piece together, over the course of 24 hours in LA. Expect to see Tom Cruise like you have never seen him before, Julianne Moore losing the plot, and even a sing-a-long to Aimee Mann’s ‘Wise Up’. It’s a masterpiece!

Running just 2 minutes under 3 hours long, the Peter Jackson classic is perfect for the family and it is also the start of a very epic saga that (if you were feeling up to it) could lead to you a further two movies (and even another trilogy). This particular movie is a fantastic start to the LOTR trilogy and amongst the darkness in it there is hope – which we kind of need right now!

Those are our personal picks, but there are plenty more classics to sit down and get immersed in for hours – notable mentions go to The Godfather Part 2, Spartacus, Gone With the Wind (where you could actually take a nap and wake up to find the movie is STILL playing), and Titantic!

We’d love to hear what your go-to ‘epic long movies’ are – comment below and let us know!
