Discover Nordic TV and Film Content on Viaplay: Your Nordic Watchlist

There is an enormous amount of Nordic TV and Film Content to discover on Viaplay, which is back and now streaming on Amazon Prime.

We checked through the platform to let you know what content is on there (and just to note, there is A LOT – too much for us to fit all in one post, but you will get a general idea!

Films

  • I am Zlatan: The brilliant biopic of Zlatan and his early years by director Jens Sjögren
  • Margrete Queen of the North: What could be best described as medieval noir by director Charlotte Sieling and loaded with an incredible cast!
  • Compartment No 6: – the Finnish Oscar entry by director Juho Kuosmanen
  • As in Heaven: Denmark’s entry into next year’s Academy Awards and an extraordinary debut by director Tea Lindeburg
  • Games People Play: Another Finnish film that is a comedy-drama about being forever young
  • Out Stealing Horses: The adaptation of Per Petterson’s novel starring the great Stellan Skarsgård.
  • Orca: Director and actor Josephine Bornebusch’s lockdown film featuring a host of recognisable faces communicating via their screens.
  • The Innocents: Eskil Vogt’s Norwegian horror was has been a huge hit this year
  • Snabba Cash Trilogy: Before the brilliant Netflix series there was the trilogy which starred Joel Kinnaman!
  • Charter: this family drama is director Amanda Kernell’s second feature after Sami Blood.

That list alone is something to get excited about! We don’t even know where to start, and here are some other movies you can discover:

  • Call Girl: Josefin Asplund is part of this star-studded film about ruthless power.
  • Pusher Trilogy: Nicolas Winding Refn’s famous trilogy with many famous faces very early in their career.
  • A War: Director Tobias Lindholm’s 2015 drama and third outing working with Pilou Asbæk.
  • In Order of Disappearance: Probably our favourite Stellan Skarsgård out there and the best revenge movie too!
  • Sami Blood: Amanda Kernell’s debut feature which is essential viewing in learning about the Sami education system. Pair it with her second film Charter!
  • Force Majeure: A dark comedy from Swedish director Ruben Ostlund who directed Triangle of Sadness.
  • The Square: Ruben Ostlund’s follow-up feature which won him his first Palme D’Or.
  • Breaking Surface: This is an absolutely brilliant thriller which sees two sisters battling to survive when one gets stuck under a rock at the bottom of the Norwegian fjords.

TV Shows

With the TV Shows it is going to be hard to know where to begin really – there is so much to watch! Some of the series are old and some are new.

So those of you who just want to go back to your comfort zone and watch your favourites like The Bridge, Beck, Wallander, Trapped (Seasons 1 & 2), Forest of the Lost, Riders of the Storm or The Killing then this is the place to come. Equally for those that want to see more of the shows we have talked about a lot in the past then just take a glance at some of these incredible series you can finally get to see.

  • Riding Into Darkness: One of our top TV series from last year, which stars Jonas Karlsson as a rather evil character getting away with some sinister deeds. Gripping television!
  • Thunder In My Heart (Seasons 1 & 2): This is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to Nordic adult drama – one of our all-time favourite series!
  • Exit (Seasons 1 & 2): Exit is both controversial and hilarious so be prepared – the series is back on Viaplay and lets hope we might see the final season arrive too!
  • The Congregation: If you want to see the brilliant Aliette Ophiem acting out of her skin then this is the series for you – you will never look at her in the same light again!
  • Limbo: Talking about actresses putting in huge performances then Limbo is another must-watch! Sofia Helin and the rest of the cast are phenomenal in this family drama!
  • Face to Face (Seasons 1 to 3): – Back to some Nordic Noir but with a very different style of narrative and a phenomenal cast! Easy to consume too with short episode lengths!
  • Trom: The Faroes Islands set thriller starring Ulrich Thomsen.
  • Pernille (Season 1 to 3): If you require some laughter and tears (see also Thunder in My Heart) then this is the place to come.
  • Live Life: Another to add to the list of series to laugh and cry to is Live Life, with a stunning performance from Hanna Ardéhn.
  • Furia (Seasons 1 & 2): This Norwegian thriller has been a huge hit – the first season most might have already seen but it now has its follow-up season available.

  • Love Me (Season 1 & 2) : Baby Reindeer director Josephine Bornebusch stars and directs in this award-winning series focusing on three generations of Stockholmers.
  • Two Sisters The series follows the lives and two sisters whose worlds change when one of them moves out leaving the other to fend for herself.
  • Ida Takes Charge: A psychology student who has a fear of everything begins to suspect a classmate of being a terrorist.
  • Harmonica: Another creation by (and starring) Josephine Bornebusch which also stars Jonas Karlsson – this series focuses on a musical couple who tour one more time with their band to save their marriage, or end it.
  • Fenris: Norwegian crime drama starring Home For Christmas Ida Elise Broch which has received heaps of praise as an enthralling thriller.
  • Delete Me (Season 1 & 2): A thriller that focuses on two friends and tells their story in reverse chronology as a secret goes viral affecting both their lives forever. Mind-blowing teen drama!
  • Thicker Than Water (Seasons 1-3): Many have wanted to watch the final season of this series and will be delighted to find they finally can.
  • The Hunters | Season 1 & 2): The TV series version of the famous Swedish film Jagarna starring Rolf Lassgård.
  • Thin Blue Line (Seasons 1 & 2): The award-winning police drama starring Gizem Erdogan and Oscar Töringe can be found here and my god it is just absolutely brilliant!
  • Threesome (Seasons 1 & 2): Both seasons are now available for the adult drama starring Matilda Källström and Simon Lööf.
