Nordic New Music: Code Elektro From Denmark

We are heading over to Denmark now to catch up with Martin who is behind Code Elektro. His new single, ‘N30n Live 2020’,was released earlier this week. Read on to find out more about his sound, influences, and cool places to check out in Denmark!

Tell us who you are and what’s your sound?

My name is Martin and I release electronic music as Code Elektro. Code Elektro is electronic music that kind of sounds like Dystopian Science Fiction Atmospheres, Neon Skylines and eternal Cyberpunk Nights with Acid Rain.

The genre is retrowave/synthwave and the music it is characterized by the use of analog synthesizers and sound design. It sounds similar to the soundtracks of movies like Blade Runner, Stranger Things and TRON: Legacy. However, it also takes a step forward to create something new via sound design, visuals and storytelling.

What exciting projects have you got coming up?

I’ve just released my brand new single N30n Live 2020 – and I’m super excited about it. In February I played a live concert here in Aarhus (before covid19) – and it was a super fun and awesome experience.

In my live band I have a live drummer and guitarist – and they really ad an awesome live groove and heavy sound to my universe.

So the crowd went completely nuts! Thankfully it was recorded, and it sounded so good that I decided to release it. And now it’s out on Spotify and other streaming platforms.

Where did you grow up and what music influenced you?

I grew up in the southern part of Denmark, close to the German border. I started playing in bands when I was 12-13 years old and I have been playing music since then. Later on I have lived in Copenhagen and Aarhus.

Growing up I was really into old school metal and electronic music. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns n Roses – but also Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. So I have always had those two genres with me, and I think you can hear a small part of it in my music.

What cool places do you recommend to visit in your city (bars, restaurants, etc)?

There’s are many cool places in Aarhus. My favorite bar is Vesterlauget, very cool place with great food and beer – and lots of cool people coming there. I have also lived in Copenhagen, and I can really recommend the bars on Vesterbro and also the music venue Vega.

We love recommendations – what have you been listening to, watching, or reading recently?

I have just read the novel DUNE by Frank Herbert – and it is an absolute Science Fiction classic! I loved it. Later this year a new Dune movie directed by Denis Villeneuve will come out (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario). And I’m really looking forward to watch it.

Finally, what was the last thing that made you swear out loud?

I have a 7 months old daughter…and sometime we have some nights where we don’t sleep so much…those days I swear a lot…mostly over details and then we laugh about it afterwards.
