Nordic New Music: Speaking with Denmark’s Yune

Yune’s debut album ‘Agog’ is another firm favourite in Minnis2Society HQ – the Danish indie/alternative band who hail from Aarhus, Denmark, are certainly ones to watch for the future. We caught up with lead singer Tobias.

Tell us who you are and what is your sound?

We’re 5 guys, who met each other at the Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, some years ago. Tobias (vocal), Tobias (drums), Mads (bass), Erlend (guitar-keys-octopus), Nikolaj (guitar). Our sound can be described as being dusty, funky with a bit of melancholy.

What exciting projects have you got coming up?

We have just played our first concert in 8 months due to Corona and it was so so great! Back in August, we played at the Empire Cinema in Copenhagen, where a friend of ours did a lot of crazy, beautiful visuals on the screen during the concert – so we were pretty excited about this one.

Apart from that we are writing a lot of new material and are hoping to get back in the studio this fall.

Where did you grow up and what music influenced you?

We listen to a lot of different stuff. We started out by listening to The Band all the time. The way they play together is so lively. Mads loves Alex G, but right now he is also going through a phase, where he listens to to funk music from his childhood. In a way it all kind of makes sense, when we play together.

More live dates have been released with the band – if you are luck enough to be based in Denmark and can get to see them -go!

What cool places do you recommend to visit in your city (bars, restaurants, etc)?

Well – I’ve just moved to Copenhagen so it is all kind of new for me here. Our rehearsal space is on Refshaleøen, which is this weird, scrappy, factory buildings, parking lots, cozy small bakeries. It’s nice for a country boy to get out of the city once in a while.

We love recommendations – what have you been listening to, watching, or reading recently?

Top of the head: Emmylou Harris – Wrecking Ball, Art Garfunkel – Waters of March, CCFX. Also trying to get a hold of the Daniels Lanois sondscaping from Red Dead 2. I love those.

Finally, what was the last thing that made you swear out loud?

I swear all the time, so I can’t really remember. But last time we were together Mads got his arm stuck between a table and his amp. That got pretty ugly. Something like “you dick-amp”.
