KoboyKex – The Musical Cowboys from the Faroe Islands

Would you believe that out on the beautiful green plains and hills of the Faroe Islands two cowboys exist bringing sweet music to our ears all the way over from their beautiful country? Well they do exist in the form of KoboyKex – we got to chat too Heiðrikur and Sigmund about their new music, living in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and perhaps a new music genre to discover – Countronica anyone? Imagine early Beck getting in entangled with a Radiohead record!

Tell us who you are and what is your sound?

We’re two lonely rangers from the tiny Faroe Islands. Nobody knows we exist here in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Our folks are quiet folks but we sure do have much in common with them janky’s in America. But this is where we like to say a word or two about that kind of conservatism. Our sound? Well I guess you could call our sound western/country/electronic sounding. Countronica perhaps.

What exciting projects have you got coming up?

We’re in the studio at the moment and we’re planning on giving singles out every two months. But we’re looking out for some opportunities – like a record label or somet’n.

It’s hard to be noticed when you’re from an island in the middle of nowhere. So we sure hope to find somet’n soon coz we cowboys sure got a lot to offer. So stay tune my friends.

Where did you grow up and what music influenced you?

We grew up in the big city of Tórshavn with 20.000 inhabitants. We’ve been neighbours for some years and I guess what brought us together was our love of good old western music. You know that kin’ from the good ol’ days. Patsy Cline, Ennio Morricone and so on. New stuff too – Beck, The White Stripes and Mirwais. And of course some good old spaghetti westerns.

What cool places do you recommend to visit in your city (bars, restaurants, etc)?

We have would recommend our lovely bowling alley Bowling Høllin á Hálsi which also has some mighty fine burgers and fries after a long game. Then we have the best karaoke bar in town called Glitnir. There you can sing and drink all night long with your favorite cousin.

We love recommendations – what have you been listening to, watching, or reading recently?

Heiðrikur: Well I’ve been listening to a lot to Roy Orbison these days. And also been dusting off my dancing shoes since I heard Róisín Murphy’s new album. I don’t watch tv so the last thing I saw was something about that corona thing everybody is talking about.

Sigmund: Been doing more reading lately. Especially older books where the characters are on some sort of voyage. Moby Dick, Gulliver’s Travels, 80 Days Around The World. Just started on “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. today.

Finally, what was the last thing that made you swear out loud?

Heiðrikur: I think it was when Heidi N’ Closet was eliminated in the eleventh episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. So it’s quite a while ago. But I have sweared since. Just can’t remember when. Probably when I spilled my drink on my fringes or some’n.

Sigmund: An amazing techno/rap song that I’m not allowed to share with you. Sorry!
