Gothenburg’s Boy With Apple had released their debut EP today – we heard from the band on what to expect with their new material, get some great new recommendations to check out, and find out what makes the band swear!
Tell us who you are and what is your sound.
We’re a band of four music nerds in our 20’s with a dreampop/shoegaze type of sound. The genre has been around for a while but we try to put our own spin on it. We use a drum machine which isn’t made for dreampop at all, more like 90s house music. But it kinda works. Not having to haul around a big drumkit for gigs is probably the biggest advantage.
What exciting projects have you got coming up?
We released a single on October 30th and are releasing our debut EP right afterwards in November. We’ll also probably be doing a few smaller gigs around Sweden.
Where did you grow up and what music influenced you?
Most of us grew up around Gothenburg which is the second largest city in Sweden. It’s an old port town and is also associated with being a ‘music’ city. A bunch of Swedish artists, especially some great indie bands, are from Gothenburg. Bad Cash Quartet, Westkust and The Embassy are some local bands that influenced us. I think they might not be very known outside of Sweden which is a real shame. Gothenburg also has ”goth” in the name which is pretty cool.
Other than that obvious influnces are the shoegaze and dreampop classics like Slowdive, DIIV, My Bloody Valentine, Beach Fossils, Cocteau Twins etc.
What cool places do you recommend to visit in your city (bars, restaurants, etc)?
Saga: Andra Långgatan! It’s a street occupied with a lot of bars, (relatively) cheap beer and weird people.
Tim: Yeah, Andra Långgatan was like awarded ‘the coolest street in Europe’ or something which is pretty funny but true in a way.
We love recommendations – what have you been listening to, watching, or reading recently?
Saga: I’ve been listening to Sunbather (the band), Soccer Mommy and OTTO this month.
I have this thing where I try to find something new every month, a new band, a new album etc. Tim influenced me a lot there. We tend to give each other a lot of music tips in the band
Tim: Really digging OTTO and ARTHUR at the moment. I think they’re on the same label, ”please make it ruins”. Amazingly weird and catchy. Also been re-watching the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies (the only good ones) with my girlfriend.
Arvid: I’ve listened to the compilation I Won’t Have To Think About You: Compiled by Bayu and Moopie a lot recently, just a lot of great indie songs.
Zara: I always come back to this comic album by Moa Romanova called ‘Alltid Fucka Upp’ (English title: Goblin Girl), a biographical story about getting by with panic attacks and depression, and it takes place in Gothenburg.
Finally, what was the last thing that made you swear out loud?
Saga: The game Call Of Duty hahaha
Tim: My boss made me take customer calls today even though I wasn’t scheduled for it. Only the most annoying people call in.
Zara: Remembering sharing my Soundcloud with people.
