Four fantastic Finnish films available now on BFI Player

Girls Girls Girls

The Finnish long-listed entry for the Academy Awards, this feel-good romantic feature has fantastic performances from its three young leads.

We first caught this film almost a year ago now when it was featured at BFI Flare and we are delighted to see the film has made it onto BFI Player and is available to wider UK audience.

I knew the film would live or die with the three leads, so I gave myself a lot of time and took it really slowly. We started with an open call and moved on from self tapes to auditions to call backs. I wasn’t just looking for three talented and charismatic individuals, but really I was looking for a band that would play together seamlessly.

Hatching

Early last year we got introduced to Hatching and were totally taken with the creature feature by director Hanna Bergholm. The film went on to have cinematic release and is even available to purchase on DVD/BLURAY, as well as on the BFI Player now too!

If you like your creepy and kooky films then this is definitely one you should watch.

The idea of having an imaginary monster hidden inside your wardrobe, like our main character has in the film Hatching, came from my own childhood memory.

Tom of Finland

Tom of Finland has been around for a while now but if you haven’t caught it yet then this is a prime opportunity to check the film out.

Directed by Dome Karukoski and starring the brilliant Pekka Strang (Dogs Don’t Wear Pants), the film shines a light on Touko Valio Laaksonen (known as Tom of Finland) who is viewed as one of the most influential figures of 20th century gay culture.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

We normally mention this film at Christmas time, but it’s worth bringing it to your attention again now, as the director behind the film is also behind the much anticipated Sisu, which we hope will be released theatrically this year.

So if you haven’t seen this film yet and want to get a bit of an idea of what to expect from the mind of the director, Jalmari Helander, then check out Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale ahead of the release of Sisu later this year!

There is also plenty more to discover on BFI Player – which ones have you found and enjoyed on the player?
