Are you ready? This month is going to be a bumper one! Here are the Nordic Releases coming in March and there is something for everyone!
Driving Mum | Cinemas | OUT NOW
Driving Mum is a stunning new Icelandic comedy drama that we first saw back in November 22 – so it really is wonderful news to see the film has finally made it the UK.
The film follows the journey of a man, his dog, and his dead mother. One of her wishes was to have her photo taken at some famous tourist spots and so her son heads out to fulfil this wish and in doing so embarks on a personal journey of discovery that leads to facing the ghosts of his past.
The film is shot in monochrome and – as you would expect from Iceland – a visual feast. I spoke to the film’s director Hilmar Oddsson about the story of creating this touching film with its intriguing central character.
You can use THIS website to find out which cinemas the film is screening at and also catch it on Curzon Home Cinema.
Spaceman | Netflix | OUT NOW
What on earth is this? An Adam Sandler movie here on the Nordic Watchlist website? Well this isn’t your average Adam Sandler movie, for a start it is in space (which is becoming quite a theme at the moment) but more importantly it is directly by Johan Renck.
Johan is a Swedish director best known for his work on the award winning series Chernobyl but has also directed episodes of series such as The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Bloodline.
Top Dog Season 2 | Walter Presents/Channel 4 | 15th March
Teddy and Emily return for the second season of Top Dog. As both do their best to avoid being sucked back into the criminal underworld the temptation remains persistent for them.
In the previous season, their relationship was characterized by a complex mix of mutual assistance and turning on each other, and this season continues in a similar vein. The narrative unfolds with Paul Ahlborg, a local magnate, embarking on an initiative to set up an electronics recycling facility in Södertälje, a project possibly entangled with organized crime.
He enlists Emily for the legal work and to resolve any problematic aspects, which could vault her back to prominence in her field. Nonetheless, accomplishing this task demands that Emily compromise Teddy’s confidence.

Young Royals Season 3 | Netflix | 11th March
The final season is here – how will it all end? Will we have a happy ending? We have previewed the first four episodes of the new season and have been really impressed with what we have seen so far.
Look out for Alex’s interview with the series creator Lisa Ambjörn which will be out next week.
The Mermaid by Anki Edvinsson | 20 March 2024
It has been a while but we are expecting another Nordic book released and this time one from one of the best-known faces on Swedish TV, Anki Edvinsson‘s transition to crime novelist wasn’t exactly surprising. With her father and brother both being police officers, Edvinsson certainly has plenty of source material to draw on.
The Snow Angel, her first book to be translated into English was published in 2023 and introduced readers to Detectives Charlotte von Klint and Per Berg and The Mermaid, the second book in the series, sees the pair return to investigate the death of a young woman and find the main suspect wearing an explosive vest and holding a detonator.
Edvinsson’s works are full of detail and the author is currently studying for a degree in criminology to better understand her characters.
Ronja The Robbers Daughter | Netflix | 28th March
So from road trips with dead mothers, Adam Sandler in space, an emotional royal finale, we enter a new fresh genre with Ronja The Robber’s Daughter. There has been a lot of excitement over this series which is based on a world famous story by author Astrid Lindgren. Astrid was famous for the Pippi Longstocking stories and Ronja The Robber’s Daughter was one of her fantasy novels. Yes, that’s right we are entering the Nordic Fantasy genre!
Get ready for beautiful scenery and seeing some of your favourite Nordic stars in very different roles with the likes of Christopher Wagelin (The Truth Will out ), Krista Kosonen (Tove), Sverrir Gudnason (Love Me), and Johan Ulveson (Bonus Family) playing a band of robbers living in magical woods.
This may not be for everyone but those that enjoy the fantasy genre or are interested in something a little different to watch then this is a great place to start.

All in all a very exciting month to keep us very busy – which series or film are you most excited to watch?
