Scandi Sensations: Top Nordic Actors Lighting Up English-Language Series

Claes Bang is set to return to UK TV screens in season three of the BBC series The Outlaws, which begins on May 31. In the quirky crime comedy-drama, he plays The Dean, a London drug dealer in charge of the Brook Hill Gang. Coming up against Stephen Merchant’s rag-tag group of community service participants, he makes for a slick and formidable enemy. 

And he’s not the only Nordic talent set to appear in English language television series at the moment. Writers, actors and directors are making their mark on our latest binge watches.

So, if you’re looking for something to sink your teeth into (because Claes Bang was also Dracula and puns are fun), here’s where you can find Nordic Actors lighting up English-language series.

Noomi Rapace – Constellation (Apple TV)

All eight episodes of the sci-fi thriller, Constellation, are available to stream on Apple TV. Noomi Rapace stars as Jo Ericsson, who has returned to earth after a disaster on a mission to space. Piecing her life back together, she soon realises that all is not as it seems. Embarking on an expose of space travel, Jo risks everything to uncover the truth. 

Renate Reinsve | Presumed Innocent | Apple TV+ | 12th June

Premiering in June on Apple TV, Presumed Innocent is the remake of the 1990 Harrison Ford film. This TV series will see Renate Reinsve star alongside the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga and Peter Sarsgaard. In her role as murder victim Carolyn Polhemus, played by Greta Scaachi in the film, Reinsve looks set to charm international audiences.

Kim Bodnia |Killing Eve | BBC iPlayer

If you haven’t watched Killing Eve, what did you do during lockdown? Broen | Bron star Kim Bodnia appeared as Villanelle’s handler, Konstantin. Earning a television BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor along the way, Bodnia waxed lyrical about his time on the show, especially as it was written by, directed by and starring women. 

Gustaf Skarsgård | Westworld | Sky, Now TV

You can currently stream all seasons of Westworld on Sky and Now TV. And it’s not just one offering of Scandinavian talent on display, here. Sidse Babet Knudsen, Fares Fares and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal also form part of the cast. A remake of the 1973 film starring Yul Brynner, this is a thoroughly well-acted, well-paced TV show full of dark, compelling and intricately woven drama. 

Joel Kinnaman | For All Mankind | Apple TV+

Another sci-fi drama making the list, this TV show has been around since 2018. Joel Kinnaman stars as Edward Baldwin, a former NASA astronaut in a world where the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon. What unfolds is a thrilling space race laced with political subterfuge, raising questions about humanity and our desire to conquer. 

You’ll also will remember that Joel Kinnaman also starred in the English language remake of The Killing which can currently be found on Channel 4.

Peter Franzén | The Wheel of Time | Amazon Prime

Everyone’s favourite Viking king, Peter Franzén, appears in three episodes of the sweeping Amazon Prime fantasy epic, The Wheel of Time. Swedish actor, Fares Fares, also makes the cast list. Franzen stars as Stepin, a human Warder, who is considered one of the most talented within his group. Although it’s not a large role, his character is well fleshed out and Franzén gives nothing less than his dramatic best.
