Well, we were certainly wrong about the pace slowing down in June when it comes to Films and TV Series – it looks like there is plenty to get excited about and this doesn’t include the fact that we should be expecting a lot of the Viaplay titles arriving on Amazon Prime soon as well! So buckle up, the Summer hasn’t arrived yet so there is plenty of reason to stay indoors get watching!
FILMS & TV SERIES
Call Me Dad | TV Series | Viaplay | 4th June | USA
Those of you in the USA with Viaplay might be excited to see a new Alex Høgh Andersen series – this time round he is trying his hand at a bit of comedy. The series is based on an idea both he and his co-star Magnus Haugaard came up; a comical (and at times stressful) story of the forever chilled Emil (Alex Høgh Andersen) who discovers his best friend Viktor (Magnus Haugaard) is dating his mother. Emil’s patience is tested to the limit given Viktor is not only his best friend but also his business partner and then throw into the mix Emil’s girlfriend Carla (Roberta Hilarius Reichhardt) who is driving everyone up the wall.
This is has some great dark Danish humour and it is refreshing to see Alex Høgh Andersen is different role which he is clearly enjoying too! Look out for our interview with the star later this month and lets hope the series travels over to the UK soon too.

Four Little Adults | Film | 7th June | UK Selected Cinemas
We have waited so patiently for Selma Vilhunen’s feature Four Little Adults – originally to be released in 2023 (the year of Alma Poysti) it got delayed, and then delayed again but finally here we are and it is certainly worth the wait!
Featuring a fantastic cast of Alma Poysti, Eero Milonoff, Oona Airola, and introducing Pietu Wikstrom the film centres around a polyamorous relationship and the repercussions it can have on those involved (and not involved). It is a delicate and beautiful film with some impressive performances from all the cast.
Four Little Adults will be screened at selected cinemas from the 7th June – any further releases we will keep you posted on.

What Remains | Film | 6th June | UK Digital On Demand – ICON Pictures
Look out for this feature and its stellar cast as it arrives on streamer ICON Pictures (which is accessible through Amazon Prime). Gustaf Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, Eero Milonoff, Magnus Krepper, and British actress Andrea Riseborough star in Run Huang’s What Remains.
First off, this film is in English, which will throw you a bit, but the main thing to be aware of is that this is very much a dark slow-burn drama. Conversations between individuals (who are well and truly broken) about dark subject matters. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but if you can stomach it you will be rewarded by the performances, the eery Ben Frost score, and Run Huang’s direction. Look out for Mary’s review of the film next week!
What Remains premieres exclusively on the Icon Film Channel from 3 June. Sign up for a 7-day free trial at iconfilmchannel.uk or via the Icon Film Amazon Prime Video channel

Jana: Marked for Life is coming to the BBC! The series, which stars Madeleine Martin, is an adaptation of the famous books by Emelie Schepp, which sees Jana Berzelius getting embroiled in a murder investigation that begins to unravel secrets of her own past.
The series is an action-packed thriller which features a fantastic cast including the likes of Pernilla August, Moa Gammel, and Johan Ulveson.

Presumed Innocent | TV Series | 12th June | Apple TV+
We are featuring this because Norways Renate Reinsve is appearing in the series and given she is such an outstanding talent who seems to be setting the world on fire at the moment we thought it would be great to share her role in this upcoming series where you will play alongside Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal in a remake of the old Harrison Ford movie and book adaptation; A courtroom drama of did he or didn’t he?
Presumed Innocent will make its global debut on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Wednesday, June 12 followed by a new episode every Wednesday through July 24.

Birthday Girl | Film | 16th June | Digital On Demand
Danish director Michael Noer‘s Birthday Girl finally gets a UK release on digital on demand through Signature Entertainment.
The intense thrillers sees Trine Dyrholm take her daughter Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl on a cruise to celebrate a big birthday only things get terribly complicated when her daughter is found one morning showing signs of an sexual assault. With the staff not doing much to help her protective mother takes things into her own hands.
Look out for our interview with director Michael Noer this week where he reveals what research inspired him to make the film.

Rose | Film | 28th June | Selected Cinemas and On Demand
If we hadn’t already had one film stacked with a fantastic cast then wait until you see who is starring in Rose – here you will find Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing), Lene Maria Christensen (Brothersr), Anders W. Berthelsen (DNA), Søren Malling (Borgen) all being directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) – now that is quite the star power!
Set over one week, Rose follows sisters Inger and Ellen on a coach trip to Paris, where Inger’s mental health struggles spark reactions from pity to discrimination. In Paris, Inger’s hidden agenda involving a figure from her past emerges, entangling the whole group. Rose is a film about love, care, and not judging a book by its cover.
Rose will screen in selected cinemas and On Demand from the 28th June
BOOKS
The Chamber by Will Dean | 6th June
June is a quiet month on the new Nordic book release front, but British writer Will Dean can be classed as a Nordic writer, living as he does now in a self-built house in the middle of a Swedish elk forest.
His Tuva Moodyson series have become classics of Nordic Noir, but his standalone novels venture into darker territory. In The Chamber (released on 6 June) a set of divers are installed in a hyperbaric chamber to work on deep sea oil pipe. When one diver is found unconscious in his bunk, panic sets in but if anyone unlocks the door everyone dies. This claustrophobic thriller sees Dean build on his trademark tension and promises to be a chilling read.
