Nordic New Music: Augustine

This week we have a chat with Swedish singer Augustine who just a year after his debut was named ‘Pop Artist of the Year’ at the Swedish Independent Music Awards!

2020 has seen a couple of releases from you which have proved really successful – what might we expect from you next?

Thank you!! I’m spending a lot of time in the studio right now, writing some new songs that I’m very excited to get out there in not too long.

With the strange times we have been living in recently have you found it easier to be creative?

It’s strange times now indeed. I’ve been very fortunate in all this mess, and it sure gives me more time to reflect. I wouldn’t say that I find myself more creative though, at least not yet! We’ll see how everything pans out.

Whereabouts did you grow up and what music did you start being influenced by?

I grew up in a little town called Jörlanda on the Swedish west coast, just outside of Gothenburg. I believe it started out with David Bowie and ABBA when I was a kid. I’ve always been fascinated about artists and bands. Reading their stories and how different songs came about. And the wave of indie music that were around the 2010s with Phoenix, MGMT, Foster The People etc. still has a big impact on me. I really started trying writing full songs in that era!

We did see you are a National fan – favourite album?

Oh yes, That’s right! I got completely hooked on them a couple of years ago when I discovered Boxer! I painted houses in the summer as a job and had that album on repeat in my earphones. Maybe not the best summer music but it was really nice to just be stuck in that world all day. Some kind of therapy to just listen and go up and down with a brush on a blank wall, haha.

What are one some of your favourite places to visit in West Sweden?

I’ll of course say Gothenburg! And there’s two big islands close to where I grew up called Tjörn and Orust.

What have you been watching, listening to, reading recently – have you any recommendations (movies, tv shows, books, podcasts, etc……….. just please don’t say Tiger King)

Haha, I only managed one or two episodes of Tiger King! Anxiety. I’m in great need of recommendations myself actually, so I’m sorry. I rewatched the movie Palo Alto a couple of days ago. I’ve watched a lot of reality series lately, but I can’t really recommend any of them. My friend recommended me the book The Alchemist so I’m gonna give that a try!

Finally, what is your tip of the day?

Listen to Coeo – Cabrio Mango!
