Nordic New Music: Fanu/FatGyver

Another weekend is upon us and we feel like digging into our Hip Hop and D&B feels – so today we are checking out Janne AKA Fanu AKA FatGyver from Finland! For all you beat fans out there get reading and get listening!

Tell us who you are and what’s your sound.

Hi! My real name is Janne Hatula, and I’m from Finland.

I make D&B and bass music as Fanu.

The older I get, the more I mellow down and seem to be getting into making (and DJing) hip hop, which I do as FatGyver.

What exciting projects have you got coming up?

My next D&B EP for Metalheadz is on the release pipeline; hopefully in 2020.

Also currently working for the next FatGyver release for my own Phatventures label.

There’s also some other projects cooking: house, “genreless” electronic stuff etc.

I just like to keep fairly busy making music – been doing it since 1992. It’s a hobby and a lifestyle for sure.

Where did you grow up and what music influenced you?

The list would be too long to mention, but my musical backbone was largely formed by all 90s type of music – mostly electronic and hip hop…that often (but not necessarily) sample-based organic sound is what I love the most.
I grew up in the Finnish countryside – a small rural town called Haapavesi.

What cool places do you recommend to visit in your city (bars, restaurants, etc)?

I currently live in Espoo (very close to Helsinki), so here I’ll recommend Olarin Panimo (local brewery with great beer), The Gallows Bird (an awarded pub with amazing beers), Blue Vinyl (a great local record store), and Niittykumpu skatepark (a new, mellow, all-concrete skatepark).

We love recommendations – what have you been listening to, watching, or reading recently?

Listening: any funk by Parliament or Funkadelic, for example…nice and mellow.

Watching: All DJing content on Serato’s Youtube channel always gets me all stoked DJing-wise.

The movie “Midsommar”: fittingly enough, it’s about some (rather cultish) Scandinavian midsummer activities…pretty freaky stuff, and well worth the watch, but not for the faint-hearted!

Finally, what was the last thing that made you swear out loud?

Software bugs! I do alpha testing for Ableton as a hobby (just making my music with unreleased software), and that means dealing with bugs.
I also do a bit of (paid) R&D work for this cool Finnish company, Loupedeck, and that’s software/hardware work…and once again lots of bugs.

I do a minor bit of Akai MPC testing, too.

So, as much as I have to accept bugs, they still make me curse every now and then!
