Four new Nordic movies to watch in March 2022

March is looking to be one very exciting month for Nordic movie releases. In fact we are about to be really spoiled! As TV series begin to quieten down (except for the release of the excellent Snow Angels over on Walter Presents from the 13th March), it is the perfect time to catch these amazing movies!

1. Against The Ice

Netflix | 2nd March

Kicking the month off is Peter Flinth’s Against the Ice which stars Nikolaj Coster Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Joe Cole (Gangs of London) as two expedition explorers who get stuck in Greenland for over two years in the early 1900’s.

Based on incredible true events and filmed in both Iceland and Greenland, we get to see the most stunning landscapes as the backdrop for the pair’s fight with the elements and nature to stay alive.

Both the leads put in a magnificent turn, their chemistry is convincing and make you root for the pair. We feel however it is only right for us to warn that any dog lovers out there might need to give this a pass (don’t say we didn’t warn you).

2. Magrete: Queen of the North

VOD | 14th March

We first saw this fantastic period drama at Reykjavik Film Festival where we deemed this as a ‘medieval noir’. A film that is both historical and with a mystery to solve, the story sees the great Danish Queen Magrete have her reign of peace between the other Scandinavian nations threatened when her son, who was thought to be dead, reappears and sets in motion the potential for serious catastrophic outcomes.

The cast in this is absolutely to die for, with Trine Dyrholm (Queen of Hearts), Soren Malling (The Investigation), Jakob Oftebro (Monster), Magnus Krepper (The Bridge), Morten Hee Andersen (Deliver Me), and many other recognisable faces making this an absolute joy to watch. Famous faces of the Nordic region are all thrown together in this very different setting!

3. Black Crab

Netflix | 18th March

While we are on the subject of incredible casts, Netflix’s Black Crab brings together some fantastic Nordic stars in this future dystopian actioner. Here you have the likes of Noomi Rapace (Lamb), Jakob Oftebo (Monster), Dar Salim (Darklands), Erik Enge (Tigers), Aliette Ophiem (Caliphate), and Ardalan Esmaili (Snow Angels).

It’s sure to be a thrilling and tense ride as six soldiers on a covert mission try and transport a mysterious package across a frozen archipelago.

Look out for Alex’s interview with the film’s director Adam Beg later in March!

4. The Worst Person in the World

Cinemas | 25th March

And if that wasn’t enough to keep you entertained then why not finish it off with one of the most talked about Nordic films in quite some time?

Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World will finally hit our screens in March – long overdue – but we truly believe it is worth the wait and the hype.

Two Academy Award nominations for Best International Film and Screenplay, plus a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress with Renate Reinsve’s spell-binding performance should be enough to tell you that this is a pretty special movie.

The story follows character Julie as she navigates her way through a period of life with some emotional and comical outcomes. All set to the beautiful backdrop of the city of Oslo!
