New Nordic MUBI News!

We have often shared our frustration in reading or hearing about fantastic new releases in the Nordic region but then having to patiently wait to see if they get a release in the UK. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t… (we are looking at you Charter, Beware The Children, Out Stealing Horses, and Psykos i Stockholm).

Things are getting better though, and it seems that the Nordic love is growing all the time, especially with Netflix producing their own shows successfully – Katla, Snabba Cash, and Young Royals have been big hits! And Curzon have been casually lining up some fantastic movies too – most recently Magnus Von Horn’s Sweat, the beautiful Tove, The Exception (a movie that has totally flown under most people’s radars), and soon Ninjababy and the animated feature, Flee.

Joining them and upping their Nordic game this month is streaming platform MUBI, who have just got hold of the distribution rights to the following movies that have all been big hits at Cannes film festival. All of these should be coming to the Mubi platform soon (dates still tbc) – we’ll update you as soon as we know more!

The Worst Person in the World (Norway)

Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World has been making waves at Cannes with many critics hailing it as one of the standout movies from the festival, so MUBI’s acquirement of this is a smart and exciting move.

As the festival came to a close it was star of the movie Renate Reinsve who picked up the best female actor award in Cannes! Check out a clip below:

Bergman Island (filmed in Sweden)

Following on from that is Mia Hansens Love’s drama comedy Bergman Island which we have been excited about seeing after hearing about it from one of the stars, Joel Spira, last year. The cast is stacked with the likes of Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska, Vicky Kriepps, and Anders Danielsen Lie (a Joachim Trier regular)!

Lamb (Iceland)

Finally the Iceland dark drama Lamb has also been picked up which is incredibly exciting news. The film stars Noomi Rapace and is directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson with positive reviews coming in from the festival. In fact some are saying that this is one of Noomi’s finest performances. We have heard a couple of interviews with the directors but will let you decide what to expect from the haunting trailer below!

This is such positive news for fans of the Nordic regions movies – even if it may take some time for the releases to come, we know it’s coming and where it is coming to – that is always a positive step.

Given the buzz that Joachim Trier and his leading lady has picked up for Worst Person in the World, could this be a potential Academy nominee?

While you wait for these to be released on the platform, check out the great Nordic features already available on MUBI.
